Department of Theory and History Art

The Department of Theory and History of Art (THISTA) was inaugurated in the academic year 2006-07 within the context of the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA).

Its major aims are to:
  • promote the historical, theoretical and interdisciplinary study of art within the context of the Athens School of Fine Arts which offers an ideal opportunity to combine theory and practice
  • encourage innovative ways to relate to the past and to other artistic traditions, with emphasis on modern and contemporary art in Greece and abroad
  • provide a forum for contemporary discussion and debate on a variety of issues relevant to both the visual and other arts.

The Department offers a four-year Bachelor Degree Programme culminating in a Bachelor of Arts in the Theory and History of Art. It also offers a two-year MA Degree in Theory and History of Art and a PhD Programme.

ECTS Requirements:

The four-year Bachelor Degree Programme is divided in two two-year sessions. In the first two-year period, six courses are required per semester with 5 ECTS points each (6 x 5 = 30 ECTS). In the last two- year period, students may choose from a variety of specialized courses which are either lecture-based (7 ECTS each) or seminars (9 ECTS each). In the 3rd and 4th year, students are required to take three lecture courses and one seminar per semester (3 x 7 = 21 + 1 x 9 = 9, total: 30 ECTS).



THE ERASMUS PROGRAMME

Courses are taught in Modern Greek. Erasmus students without knowledge of Modern Greek will be able to follow a number of courses on the basis of the following methods:

  • Tutorials (in English or other foreign language).*
  • Evaluation based on written papers (short assignments and a final paper) in English or other foreign language; oral examinations may also be available, depending on the instructor.
  • Access to a fully equipped library in international bibliography, videos, films, etc. http://www-en.library.asfa.gr/askt/site/Home/t_section
  • Visits to sites, museums, galleries, etc. (in Athens and other locations in Greece).
  • Access to the Annexes which give the possibility to visit important sites and study local culture in various parts of Greece: Delphi, Hydra, Mithymna (Lesvos), Mykonos, Rethymno (Crete), Rhodes, Tsepelovo (Epirus). http://www.asfa.gr/en/institution/facilities/artistic-stations
  • Contact with artists and studio work.

*Languages available are English, French, German and Italian, depending on the instructor.

The academic year runs from October to June. It is divided in two semesters: Fall semester:
October - January
Spring semester: March - June

Erasmus students can enroll during September or February.
