WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Semester A

The tradition of sculpture has a long history in Greece. Sculpture is a space-based art and in general three-dimensional; it is intensely physical, but substantially intellectual. Social, political and economical conditions define the world of modern sculpture and, at the same time, modern art. Thus, intellectual and philosophical discussions are one of the tools of modern plastic arts. Materiality returns in a different way, using new materials and methods for producing works of art. The artist of the 21st century embraces a wide range of possibilities in order to tell their stories. Objects, movies, photography, design, installations, muscle and mechanical kinetics, text, sound and performance are all basic horizons for the modern vision.

From the 1st to the 8th semester, sculpture and design exercises are carried out in order to familiarise students with the language of art and its materials. Moreover, exercises in plastic art are carried out based on physical model studies or free themes (narrative and abstract art), using malleable materials (clay, plaster, plasticine, wax, ceramic materials, silicone, wood, metal). The following are also carried out:

  • Combination exercises with multiple means and materials (installations, video installations, activities, performance, constructions), using any materials, ready-made objects, collage, free experimentation and group exercises;
  • Design exercises and planning the production and implementation of a work or project (financial and logistical implementation), personal search and research on the work of each student;
  • Exercises with multiple approaches and ways of visual formulation and study of different artistic practices in modern art.

Other fields and themes that will concern us, at an introductory level, during the studies are:

  • Sculpture and visual arts in reference to moving pictures, photography, color, architecture, urban environment, the environment, public space, the earth, monuments and the random -
  • Art beyond the possibilities of materials, the solid existing object and the theoretical, objects of thought, sacred objects, the body as part of a material, time, the ephemeral of the experience
  • Work of art and context (historical, social, economical, psychological)
  • Work of art and space, public, communication, behaviours - Work of art and mechanical reproduction -
  • Critique. The role of the artist and their words
  • Script in visual arts 
  • The traditional concept of a work of art, collecting works of art, investment value, art museums, product, acquisition 
  • Artist and professional prospects

All semesters include Theory lectures on the history of art, sculpture and aesthetics, as well as presentations of artists, artistic movements and Thematic exhibitions that have defined modern art.

The structure of the course consists of the following main axes: A subject is given and an open discussion is carried out among all the students in the workshop. Then, students present some drafts and ideas which are analysed and discussed with each student separately or in group and a Theoretical approach is attempted with references and research in the work of other artists or movements. Moreover, the method of technical support, construction and presentation of the assignment is discussed. Each assignment is presented and defended by each student before the workshop participants and they bear the responsibility for the final result. A discussion follows with the professors with the participation of all the students. The same method applies on the personal themes set by each student.


Semester B

The 2nd semester also includes sculpture and design exercises in order to familiarise students with the language of art and its materials as well as exercises in plastic arts based on physical model studies or free Theme (narrative and abstract art), using malleable materials (clay, plaster, plasticine, wax, ceramic materials, silicone, wood, metal). Theory lectures are given on the history of art, sculpture and aesthetics, as well as presentations of artists, artistic movements and thematic exhibitions that have defined modern art.


Semester C & D

Semester E & F
  • Exercises with multiple approaches and ways of visual formulation and study of different artistic practices in modern art. Other fields and themes that will concern us, at an introductory level, during the studies are:

Semester I & J
During the 9th and 10th semester, a dissertation is carried out, in the context of which there is a discussion on the planning, production and presentation of it, followed by a critical, philosophical and historical approach of the personal work of the students. Moreover, the production of a portfolio is planned along with the method for presenting the artworks.

Ι.1 Leaning objectives
The ten (10) semesters in Sculpture Workshop A include theoretical (ideas and concepts) and practical (forms and materials) exercises with the aim to enable each student to design, implement, criticise and approach within the historical context of their references their own personal work; to develop their individual skills; to identify and study the different art practices, both classic (plastic art with clay, plaster, silicone, liquid materials, moulds, ceramics, metal, collage, wood, polyester, design and architectural design, plasticine, jewelry-microsculpture wax) and modern (designing with multiple means and materials, installations, video installations, performance, construction, stopmotion); to be able to identify the different procedures for the implementation of artistic projects, planning the production and implementation of a work or project (financial and logistical implementation).

Students:
  1. Approach the connection of critical thinking with the creative act in their activities not only in their personal artistic expression but also in the social aspects of their activities in the modern era; 
  2. Learn to communicate, within the team, their personal artistic work and put their personal vision and work to the critique and judgment of individuals and groups; 
  3. Actively promote their learning experience via artistic activities, art projects and social events with a collaborative and participative character;
