Painting Workshop I was founded in academic year 2008-2009.
The students who attend the courses of this workshop are encouraged to specialize through the engagement, participation and involvement with a broad range of media.
These media are both digital and analogue and focus around:
Drawing, the drawing process in general, space installations
Film Video (video art and its products)
Photography (the analogue image, digital prints and the compositional image)
Sound (sound projects-installations)
Performances

2. Students are invited to:
Work by mainly using the above media, provided that they explore their interrelationship during the progress of their work and depending on the case.

Workshop cycles

1st Cycle (includes the first and the second year of study) :
With an 20% emphasis on drawing - 60% on assigned projects - 20% on painting
(use of traditional drawing and painting media without representational characteristics)
Analysis drawing methods for rendering and processing workshop projects that prepare
students for handling projects with the use of modern visualisation approaches.
Free use of materials
Modern methods for rendering, approaching and representing concepts.

2nd Cycle (includes the third and the fourth year of study)
50% workshop projects
50% student projects

3rd Cycle (includes the fifth year of study)
100% student projects
(dissertation)

Description
Drawing - Painting
This course discusses Basic drawing principles.
It focuses around drawing and its possibilities (outline, open shape, surface, models, accumulation, movement, rhythm, transition, repetition, the concept of time in drawing etc.)
Relevant exercises and projects are assigned during the workshop.
Studying the limits of drawing.
From representational drawing to the narrative strategy of representation.
Image representation methods.
The act of drawing as a wider process for organising and formulating the language of expression.
Free use of materials, research, experimentation.
Workshop projects
Since no form of artistic expression is higher than others, the artists can as well use any form, from speech (written or verbal) to natural reality). Speech, image, text, narration.
Free use of different forms of art in order to formulate a final approach to projects. Before the presentation and throughout the preparation of the projects, there will be discussions and argumentation among students regarding their choices and decisions on the handling and development of their projects.
All discussions concerning the progress of the projects shall be taking place in the workshop room with the presence of the entire team of the semester. After projects have been completed, the students will be responsible for coordinating and installing their works for the final exhibition where their essays will be assessed.

Objective
Beyond the values of drawing and painting, the students will be also gaining an understanding of the uniqueness and quality of drawing and materials. They will be also learning about traditional concepts, methods, techniques and values, representation and processing strategies for concepts that will be later arising through the use of modern analogue and digital media. Through an artwork’s modern conception and processing methods they will be re-appreciating traditional values and practices and will be able to explain their approach respectively.
They will be understanding the polysemy of modern visual expression and the infinite media of expression that they can be appropriating.
(Thanks to the economy in their use, modern media entail a power of immediacy) Teamwork and the process of exhibiting the work and its philosophy. The potential for publicly presenting the artists and the parameters of his/her work. Argumentation regarding the presence of the public.
Learning outcomes

Theory-based:
Apart from the presentation of their work, students will also have to bring bibliography and printed material on the artists that have provided inspiration for them or artists that are of particular interest.
It is necessary to be aware of artist cases that present similarities with their style, and the respective essays.
Practice-based:
Negotiating their possibilities through modern visual expression means.
Communication-based:
As equal members of the team, they participate in the completion of the project, they carry out its installation (at the exhibition space) and they present-support it publicly.

Lectures, discussions, workshops, individual perspectives, autonomous research, criticism.

2Nd Cycle:

Description
During the semesters, the students will be working on Workshop Projects and Selection Projects.
Students will be supporting their selection and will be presenting their work to the entire team that participates in the semester project.
During the meetings, there will be theory introductions and studies, discussions and work presentations of artists or art groups that have shaped the modern visual scene with their work.
There will be a particular emphasis on the personal project selection for each student and the process of the project’s presentation and documentation.
The students will be supporting their selection and will be presenting their work to students from all years of the department.
[They will be rather treated as trainee professional artists who are claiming their personal space of action in the wider area of the labout market (Art Spaces, participation in public tenders and projects, advertising, prints, television, cinema and other art applications)]
Objective and learning results.

  • To develop the potential for observing and analysing phenomena that shape visual expression and understand its limits. 
  • To understand the methods and the practices enabled by modern visual expression in order to be able to render its different concepts and meanings. 
  • To selectively study the broader artistic and visual space of the twentieth century (particularly its second half) and identify artists, trends, ideas, works, attempts etc. that are considered to be coinciding with their perspective and have generally affected/inspired the work of each student.
  • The visual language provides an opportunity to understand social reality (since this is expressed through visual expression) as well as the interpersonal, internal, psychological environment (which it carries, projects and reproduces). 
  • To identify their special area of interest and develop through their work a personal style of expression and representation of their perspective through work proposals. 
  • To be able to support and present their work and interpretations publicly. 
  • To broaden the range of materials they use as well as their scope of applications. 
  • Free expression experimentations and formulation of concepts with various expression methods, techniques and alternative media. 
  • Free use of materials and methods for approaching projects.

Teaching strategies
Participating in workshop activities, workshops and artist and curator visits, research, autonomous work outside the school, free experimentation, visiting and participating into art events, participating in exhibitions outside the school.

Assessment criteria
Research and exploration, creativity and originality, participation in group discussions, presentation and support of projects, artistic activities.
70% Semester projects (artistic result, research, project development)
30% oral presentation and support of the project, art activities.

3rd Cycle:
100% Student Projects (Dissertation)
Description
Each student will be selecting and proposing one project-autonomous proposal that will be part of their dissertation.
Research and collection of information for the theoretical documentation and development of their project.
Presentations of works, artists and alternative proposals that are linked to the questions negotiated by the proposed projects.
Free choice of media and materials (the students are free to propose potential collaborations with similar field for the completion of their project).

Objective
To develop a personal visual idiom and a problematic around a certain project category.
To develop the multi-functional expression character of artistic communication.
To compile as many information and references as possible in order to support their dissertation.
To prepare students for their entrance into the labor market

Teaching and learning strategies
Participating in workshop activities, research, work outside the school, free experimentation, visiting and participating into art events, participating in exhibitions outside the school.
Contact with agencies which are negotiating the production of art in the wider area of the labout market (Art Spaces, participation in public tenders and projects, advertising, prints, television, cinema and other art applications)
Assessment criteria
Originality, clear language, diversity of meanings and development, artistic and constructional quality of the work.
Professional integrity and consistency in the distribution and presentation of the project.
